uit Smoking Statistics - The Numbers Say About Smoking

by CECILIA HOLMES

Smoking started as early as 5000 BC in religious ceremonies. With its spreading popularity, it soon became a form of recreational drug use. Rates of smoking kept on rising. And so did the diseases and deaths related to it.

With the rising statistics on smoking-related diseases and deaths, many countries tried to lower smoking rates through initiating anti-smoking campaigns, establishing high taxes on tobacco products, and implementing smoking bans in public institutions. These measures don't seem effective in the developing world because smoking rates are still increasing by 3.4 every year. But in developed world, these measures seem effective because smoking rates started to slowly decline or stayed constant. In the United States, smoking rates from 1965 to 2006 dropped from 42% to 20.8%.

Below are statistics on some smoking-related diseases:

• The risk of developing heart attacks, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, atherosclerosis, and stroke is increased by smoking. • In the United States, around 87% of lung cancer cases are related to smoking. • The risk of suffering a heart attack is 5 times higher among smokers than nonsmokers. • Smoking during pregnancy can cause birth defects and miscarriages. • A smoker is throwing away 11 minutes of his life for every cigarette. • A smoker's life expectancy is reduced by 2.5 to 10 years. • 50,000 Americans die every year because of secondhand smoke. • Smoking is now considered as the second major cause of death in the world. It causes 58.8 million deaths worldwide. • A smoker or former smoker dies every 6.5 seconds. • Secondhand smoke increases the risk of lung cancer and heart disease. • Sudden infant death syndrome has been linked to smoking pregnant women.
