Smoking cigarettes is extremely harmful to your health and you're ready to bite the bullet and quit the unhealthy habit once and for all. You need to determine the method you plan on taking to quit. It's very difficult to quit smoking cold turkey as it takes much strength, willpower and determination on your part.
There are many different choices available to you to help you quit smoking. Let's look at your options.
* Zyban. The generic name is bupropion. It doesn't have nicotine in it and can aid in decreasing nicotine cravings. This drug can cause insomnia and severe allergic reactions are rare. Not all people can take Zyban, for instance if you have seizures, people who take antidepressants (monoamine oxidase inhibitors), or if you have an eating disorder you should avoid Zyban.
* Nicotine gum. There are two nicotine gum products available and they are Nicorette and Thrive, but there isn't a generic gum. The gum can help take care of your cigarette craving. It's not ideal for people with dental work. You should not smoke when using the gum as a quit smoking aid. May cause nausea and dizziness.
* Nicotine patch. The two patches on the market are Nicoderm CQ and Habitrol with no generic patches available. Some side effects of the patch can be, nausea, dizziness, upset stomach, itching and irritation under and around the patch, sleeping disturbances along with vivid dreams. Avoid if you have psoriasis or eczema.
* Nasal spray. It's a prescription spray by the name of Nicotrol. Side effects can be an irritated throat, sinus and nasal irritation, watery eyes, coughing and sneezing. Avoid if you have asthma or allergies. May cause nausea and dizziness if you get too much nicotine.
* Chantix prescription. May control cravings and ease some of the withdrawal symptoms. May cause nausea, behavior changes and insomnia along with a slight possible severe allergic reaction. Avoid if you have kidney problems. You may be unable to operate machinery or drive.
It's very difficult to quit smoking cold turkey and the other quit smoking methods have possible unpleasant side effects. An effective and safe option would be to try to quit smoking with hypnosis, which can be done in the privacy of your own home.
